Oakwood University is excited to share the news that Dr. G. Alexander Bryant, ’82, was confirmed as the new president of the North American Division (NAD) by the General Conference (GC) Executive Committee on July 9, 2020. We congratulate our Board Chair, and our Oakwood alumnus.
“We are extremely pleased to be alive in this moment in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Bryant is the second African American to be elected to this leadership role. As President of Oakwood University, I am personally grateful that an exemplary graduate of our institution is not only ‘at the table,’ but serves also as the ‘host’ to the diverse North American Division,” said Dr. Leslie N. Pollard. “Knowing Dr. Bryant since his days at Oakwood, I know that his now-amplified leadership will bless our NAD constituencies beyond measure.”
Glenward Alexander (“Alex”) Bryant has most recently served as both executive secretary of the NAD and associate secretary of the GC, a position he’s held since October 2008. Before coming to the division, Bryant served as the president of the Central States Conference in Kansas City, Kansas, for 11 years. He was appointed as Chairman of the Oakwood University Board of Trustees in April, 2020, upon the retirement of his predecessor Elder Dan Jackson.
In an recent interview Dr. Bryant was asked about opportunities for the NAD in the next five years and shared this, “It is time to bring the gospel that we love, the gospel that we believe in and the communities we are called to serve together… It will transform (the) communities are churches are in, our cities and our country… We can be a voice, that people can go to in these uncertain times, of certainty.”
Bryant graduated with a dual major in Theology and Business Administration from Oakwood College (now Oakwood University) in 1982. He began his ministry that same year in Springfield, Missouri, and Coffeyville and Independence, Kansas. In 1986, Bryant was ordained, and continued his education by earning a Master of Divinity from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University, in 1988. The Central States Conference voted Bryant to serve as Youth/Pathfinders/National Service Organization director, Temperance Director, and Superintendent of Education in 1990; and he became president of the conference in 1997. In 2011, Bryant earned a Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary.
Bryant is married to the former Desire Wimbish, ’82. They are the parents of three adult sons, Travis, Traven and Terrence, who are also alumni of Oakwood.
